The Chinese Zodiac is a traditional calendar used by Asians in determining the year of an animal that people were born on. Unlike a regular calendar which lasts only a year, the Chinese Zodiac calendar lasts forever since the years of the past and of future generations are carved, allowing for people to know the zodiac animal of a newborn child later on. Nowadays, many other ethnicities have enherited and used the Chinese Zodiac calendar.
The Chinese Zodiac doesn't just depend on the year. It also depends on the month and day as well. Chinese New Year, which occurs in either late January or early February, is when the real day of the new animal. If your birthday is before the day of the real Chinese New Year, than your zodiac animal will be backwards by one.
For example, I am born on January 7, 1992. People would expect that I was a monkey right away. But no, I am actually born on the year of the Ram. As you can see, my birthday is not after the day of Chinese New Year. So, instead of being a monkey, I go one animal back, and end up as the Ram. (This is important to know in order to determine your true zodiac.)
