Dot Hack Roots
.hack//ROOTS is an anime version based on the latest .hack game: .hack//G.U. The story follows a character named Haseo, who joined and started playing "The World" just because his friends told him it was a fun game. As Haseo plays, he encounters wierd things such as PK'ers (Player Killers), and a guild association, known as the Twilight Brigade, who is after an undefined item known as the Key of the Twilight. Whether if it exists or not, things just get weirder and weirder within "The World" as Haseo develops in the game.

"The World" is an enigmatic game with such astounding independence as there are some features that the system administrators can't even operate or touch by themselves. Some of these features follow their own set of rules, espeically Lost Grounds, AI's, and Virus Cores.

Characters
  • Haseo: Character Class - Black March Weapon (Black Adeathed Rogue)... Haseo is the protagonist of .hack//ROOTS. He is a round character who develops later on. At first, Haseo's anti-social and just lounges around in the game. His life changes once he joined the Twilight Brigade and the mysteries of "The World" fascinates him somewhat in wanting to know more.

  • Ovan: Unknown Character Class... Ovan is a mysterious player who has a strange, unique giant item as part of his left arm. He is the guild master of the Twilight Brigade and assumes the existence of th Key of the Twilight. Ovan first met Haseo when he revived him after being PK'ed. Many players are interested in Ovan and his mysterious left arm, which inherits the deadly AIDA virus.

  • Shino: Character Class - Curse Healer... Shino is referred as the Co-Guild Master. She is very close to Ovan and knows him in reality. Shino has interests in Haseo after hearing Ovan's situation. She is a kind, friendly girl who enjoys helping newbies. She, just like Ovan, also assumes the Key of the Twilight's existence to make playing "The World" more interesting. The two of them are tangled in a mysterious relationship.

  • Tabby: Tabby is a newbie to "The World" and joined the Twilight Brigade through Shino's invite. She is very hyper and has a character appearance of a cat. Note the ears, tail, and the gloves (when she battles). Tabby loves to make new friends and even though she may not be very strong, Tabby is willing to help them out during their "down" moments.

  • Sakisaka: Sakisaka has been a member of the Twilight Brigade for a long time. Although he's a member, he doesn't know what his purpose for joining even was. He finds it unbelieveable that such an item as the Key of the Twilight would exist. Sakisaka is known as one of those game addicts who don't enjoy feeling the outside world. He mostly spends his time in front of the computer.

  • Phiro: A raccoon shaped character who is quite knowledgeable about The World. He mainly settles at the bridge in the city Mac Anu. Phiro takes envy in Haseo as he notices the change within him each day he plays the game. In real life, he is an old man who lives with no one else but his cats. "The World" is just a place for him to settle down and pass time by.

  • Tri Edge: A twin blade with an apperance similar to the legendary Kite. Despite his dark exterior, he is like an administrator, wandering around the game system to repair damages and code malfunctions. He is mistaken as the main cause for the "Unreturners". Tri Edge's real intention is hunting down Ovan who carries the deadly AIDA virus in his left arm. *SPOILER:* Ovan is actually the main victim in releasing the AIDA, and PK'ing the players to eternal unconciousness... The moment he disappears, Tri Edge would've been too late, standing as the last person suspencted as the culprit of the cause.

    Review/Opinion
    Anime Rating: 6.5/10
    Manga Rating: --
    Overall Rating: 6.5/10
It was a disappointment to watch the ending which filled in no gaps at all. I mean, to actually understand the whole plot, you had to play the game, watch the OVA's and the movie (.hack//G.U. TRILOGY), read the manga and even do some OUTSIDE RESEARCH on Wikipedia. .hack//ROOTS was a very open anime that had many plots flying around but not one of them was completed. It was left at a cliffhanger. I believe that the only way to know the true ending is to play the game associated with this series: .hack//G.U. The only thing I liked was the scenery graphics and activeness of the characters when they were together as a guild. Everything kind of got killed when they separated and all. I wish I had the game to find out how it ends =_= ... But other than that, if you feel like filling the sand in the holes, then Wikipedia will have all of the answers you'll need for clarification.
