Twice in a millenia or every 500 years, a tournament is held for shamans to compete in. Shamans, they are people who have spiritual powers to communicate with ghosts/spirits and are able to their powers for combat through integration with a body or item that relates to the spirit. Yoh Asakura is a young shaman who has moved to Tokyo, Japan for training. He desires a relaxed life but the only way he can fufill this wish of his is to win the Shaman Tournament.. and gain the title of "Shaman King".

Yoh Asakura: A 14-year old boy who wants to live a relaxed life. He is lazy, loves to listen to music, but very powerful in combat at the same time. Yoh has a spirit named Amidamaru who is a legendary samurai 600 years ago. They both have a strong bond of friendship between each other. Even though Yoh is lazy, the relaxation within him helps him win battles with other shamans.
Anna Kyouyama: Yoh's fiancee (it was an arranged marriage) who is no joker. She is very stict when it comes to the shaman tournament. Anna will make sure that Yoh becomes Shaman King and declares her as his wife. Anna's dream is to become the first Shaman Queen of the world and uses her special training program to prepare Yoh for the tough battles ahead.
Manta Oymada: A very short kid who was Yoh's first best friend (when Yoh first moved into Tokyo). Manta was the first person who ever believed Yoh's abliity as a shaman (since a lot of people cannot see spirits/ghosts). He gradually becomes more and more interested about shamans and follows Yoh around, watching his battles, giving him support, and helping in any way that he can.
Bokuto No Ryu: Ryu wasn't a shaman at first but he gradually becomes one as he trains with Yoh. He was mean in the beginning on their first encounter when he tried to kill them for invading his "sacred hang" on Fumbari Hill. Anyways, Ryu falls for girls easily, and I mean easily. His spirit is Tokegaroh, a lizard bandit who seeks revenge after Amidamaru from long ago.
Horo Horo: Horo Horo is a very hyper shaman who loves to stuff himself until his stomach is content. He originally came from the North, where a lot of snow was. His battle technniques include his snowboard and ice. His spirit is Kokoro, a cute minushen (sp?) who breaths in oxygen and breathes out ice during battles.
Pirika: Horo Horo's younger sister who is is very strict on his training, just like Anna. She absolultely refuses to have her older brother defeated in battle and may get over confident when training him.
Ren Tao: A Chinese shaman who is Yoh's first rival. On the first battle between him and Yoh, Ren lost but trains to become the best among the other shamans. His family expects him to become the best and that losing is not an option. "Kill or be killed" would be their family motto. His spirit is Bason, a powerful Chinese Warlord who rides on a steed named Black Raven.
Jun Tao: Ren's older sister. She is a Daoist and instead of using spirits, she uses a dead body and controls them with talismens (slips of paper with written commands on them). The body who fights under her command is Lee Pairon, a famous movie maker in the past who did his own stunts. (Manta is very fond of him.)
Tamao Tamamura: A shy girl who has a major crush on Yoh. She tends to lose a lot of confidence when it comes to realizing that Anna is Yoh's wife. She's an apprentice to Yoh's grandpa and has been training with him eversince she was 4. She uses an ouija board to communicate with the spirits. Tamao has 2 spirits, Ponchi (a racoon) and Konchi (a fox) who get carried away when fighting their enemies. ^^;
Lyserg Diethel: A boy who doubts his skills as a shaman. He puts himself down a lot and doesn't give himself enough credit. Lyserg has a bad past of when his parents died in a raging fire, unexpectedly before his eyes when he got home (at a young age). His spirit is Morphin, a pink fairy who merges with his Dowzing Pendulum and unleashes powerful sneak attacks.
Chocolove: The "so called" comedian. His jokes are funny to him but when it comes to amuzing the others, eh.. let's just say that he gets in a lot of trouble (especially by Ren). His spirit is Mic, a leopard that can leap with long, amazing jumps.
Iron Maiden Jeanne: A maiden who wants peace to the world. She believes that defeating all evil is the only way to purify the world but she doesn't have the will to see good deep inside the enemis. Her spirit is Mash, a gigantic monkey-like figure who can crush the enemy to eternal death.. in a single clench of its fists.
Hao Asakura: Yoh's older brother. He plans to wipe out the existence of mortal humans and create a world where only shamans live. He has entered recent Shaman tournaments from the last several years by reincarnating into the Shaman Council Staff.

This was a good series and very funny too. The battles and plot are great! Way better than Yu-Gi-Oh with less "don't let them psyche you out" or "believe in yourself" speeches, under my opinion since Shaman King was made by them too. Sure there's a lot of support, but atleast it doesn't get too carried away or too overused.
